I’m waking up | Morning Devotion

I’m waking up.

Ben and I met in a religious studies class at VCU. I don’t remember much from the class but I can remember the professor adamantly encouraging us to touch the Earth at least once a day. Whether we ran our fingers through grass, touched a tree, or laid on the ground and admired the beautiful sky while the grass interlaced with our hair. His point was that we are so disconnected from God’s creation, that we are often so rushed that we miss the beauty that He puts in front of us daily.

I’m waking up.

As I drove down the road this morning to head to work I was literally stopped in my tracks. The cows grazing in the field, the fog settling in over the hills as the sun was rising above the trees. It was perfect. I threw the car in reverse, parked, then threw off the dress heals, and walked over towards the cows. As my feet were drenched in the cold, morning dew, I stood there and marveled at God’s creation and the professor’s advice some 15 years ago came flooding back. And to think, I almost kept driving.

I’m waking up.

Since our move to the country I’ve been able to see things differently. Maybe God knew that I couldn’t free myself of self-imposed performance pressure in the growing town we left. Where we lived, where I grew up, there was so much history. Many good memories, but also so much hurt. I think that God just knew what I needed to truly (re)connect to Him and to find my purpose. The country. Simplicity. Star filled skies. Dirt roads. New Beginnings. History is very heavy. He knew how to free me of that burden.

I’m waking up.

What I’m realizing is that today I get to write tomorrow’s history. My presence today, my actions today will determine the weight of tomorrow. Just as the professor suggested that we remove the barriers between us and God’s Earthly creations I think that God wants us to remove the barriers [and history] on our hearts. He wants us to see and experience ALL of his creations. People. Places. Things. Relationships. Community. Freedom. Blessings. He wants our full attention – without barriers and fears – a direct connection.

I’m waking up.

I’m seeing things differently – I think the way He originally intended. Unguarded. Unfiltered. Pure. Simple. I’m learning to be present in the moment. Getting priorities straight – God. Family. Community. I’m walking down this road into the unknown, but celebrating the freedom in each step knowing that He is there. He is with me.

Allyson - This is beautiful… and so true! We are all so busy and wrapped up in other things that we forget to take in the simple beauty right before us!! It is truly a gift that God has given us to be here on this Earth He created for just a little while, grow our connection with Him, and prepare for our eternity in His Kingdom!ReplyCancel
